Syumbling Blocks in Testing and Autoamtion

Many organizations purchase test automation tool, allocate its evaluation to a team as an add-on responsibility. This team juggles between the primary project deliverables and gets little (or no) time to explore this new tool. Days (and months) pass-by without a conclusion on how to digest the new tool within the organization’s project frameworks. Result: Automation test tool stays on the shelf of the organization with the verdict “Whosoever team wants to use it, can pick, explore, learn and utilize it; it is available for them.”

If you are from those privileged few who have managed to cross the initial chasm of getting started; the follow-up adoption strategy looks hazy. No separate planning goes into this adoption process and the automation test tool adoption is seldom treated as a unique project. At times, this adoption is considered as a unique project but without a dedicated team. In such cases, the adoption planning & execution takes a back seat for not being a mandatory deliverable.

Consequently, the implementation of automation progresses intermittently as the team gets some free time from their ‘primary’ project deliverables. Lack of dedicated focus sharpens the learning curve for the resources partially allocated to the adoption process. The gap between the technical expertise assumed to be needed and actually needed to exploit the full potential of the tool compounds the problem. Management starts feeling that the Automation for the application is not helping much. Many COTS tools do not provide a training and/or adoption program; leaving the organizations to rely upon the 3rd-party training providers often with unreliable training content & depth. This contributes to the lack of visibility about the team’s readiness to exploit the tool.

Every project requires separate adoption initiatives irrespective of the penetration of the tool within the organization. In such cases, the most common roadblock is the ambiguous scope of automation within the project. Usually scope for Automation is not specified separately in a Test Plan. Eventually, the Automation Test Case selection criterion becomes ambiguous. Frequent requirement changes leave even lesser time for the team to automate the AUT.

All the above problems are very common with the organizations of the present age, and they all contribute to reduce the value addition by using automation tools.
